Hotel Review: Lace Market Hotel, Nottingham, good service, tatty at edges

In the interests of full disclosure, I should point out I won this stay which included three course dinner and a bottle of wine.

After check in we went to our room, number 29. We had half unpacked and my wife asked If i could turn the temperature up, it was cold in the room. Well no I couldn't find any way to do so. My wife went to the phone in the room to ring and enquire how best to do this. The phone didn't work, no dial tone nothing. As my wife was digging out a number to ring reception, I went to the tv, no tv remote either.

My wife pointed out to reception these deficiencies and they didn't attempt to appease or explain, instead upgraded us to room 30. This is bigger, warmer and has a tv remote although it also has those old energy lightbulbs that take about 20 mins to warm up and delver light. We also noted that the large bathroom has a huge window looking down on to the street...and no curtains or covering of any kind. Ok we are high up but even so..

As other reviews have mentioned, the water pipes rattle about at indiscriminate times.

We had dinner reserved in the Merchant Restaurant, but because of my wife being seven and bit months pregnant there were many items on the menu unsuitable for her. We asked if we could change to their Cock And Hoop pub as that was more suited to our needs. To be fair it was no problem at all and the staff on front desk were very helpful.

The food in there was good, service was a little slow but the staff did apologise and offer further drinks on the house, we saw them do this to another table. I appreciate this, if you cant be quick, apologise and try make amends.

None of the deserts appealed and so our very helpful waitress offered us the menu from Merchants which did tick a box or two...excellent.

Back in the room and its clear, this hotel is in an old house and it shows, thin carpets, chipped paint, window shutters that don't shut.

Breakfast was good and varied, again service a little slow, seems a common theme, Good selection of cereal, fruit, bread, meats etc.. cooked breakfast with veg options, omelettes etc....

Its billed as part of the finesse collection. Well I think an overhaul s badly needed. The staff are excellent in our experience, the product doesn't quite match.

Tip: I am guessing, with the ease of which they got us out of room 29 this is a dud room and they know it...
