Clumber Park, Worksop welcomes 80's pop Glitterati

Clumber Park Saturday 16th August 2014

Our Just Music and Just Families reader just love this guy...voted best retro act 3 years running following outstanding Rewind performances and headline tours of his own, Billy Ocean headlines Flashback at Clumber Park on Saturday 16th August 2014.

Billy Ocean is the biggest black recording star Britain has ever produced, one who has sold over 30 million records in his lifetime and has achieved extraordinary success as both an artist and a songwriter.

Born in Trinidad, Billy settled in London’s East End when just seven years old. Billy got his first break when he signed to GTO records, for whom his second single was the Motown-ish Love Really Hurts Without You, which reached No. 2 in the UK charts and No. 12 in the US. Two top twenty singles followed; Love on Delivery and Stop Me, then Danger became a smash in both the UK and the US. Billy changed record labels and his move to Jive Records provided instant success, with the million selling American number one single Caribbean Queen (for which Billy won a Grammy for best R&B Vocal), followed by Loverboy, and Suddenly, which became the first of Billy’s killer ballads. 1986 wasn’t bad either, opening with When the Going gets Tough (the tough gets going), the theme song to the Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner/Danny Devito movie Jewel of the Nile.

Billy then launched the Love Zone album, which went straight to No. 2 in the UK charts, staying in the top 40 for six months.  In the US, there was a No. 1 single with There’ll be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry). More Hits were to follow with the now classic Get Outta My Dreams; Get Into My Car, giving Billy yet another US No. 1 hit.

The thoroughly delightful Kim Wilde saw her debut single, ‘Kids In America’ in 1981, become a worldwide hit paving the way for a recording career which yielded ten albums and in excess of thirty singles, bringing success in every major record market and sales of 10 million and 20 million respectively.

Single successes included Chequered Love, Water On Glass, Cambodia, View From A Bridge, You Keep Me Hangin’ On (a worldwide success and a number one in the USA, Another Step (Closer To You), You Came, Never Trust A Stranger and Four Letter Word.

In 1983 Kim was voted Best British Female Singer at the BPI Awards, while “live” highlights include performing to over 2 million people on a five month European stadium tour with Michael Jackson in 1988, and supporting David Bowie across Europe on his 1990 Greatest Hits Tour.

ABC has enjoyed a glittering career to date. Very definitely one of a number of groups who came along and kick-started the Eighties with their own brand of pop for a ‘new decade’. On it’s release in May 1982 their debut album “The Lexicon of Love” crashed straight into the UK album charts at number one. Showcasing the hits songs  Tears Are Not Enough, Poison Arrow, The Look Of Love and All Of My Heart.

A ground-breaking collection of modern love songs. With a majestic production from the legendary Trevor Horn it remains a classic to this day. Voted by many as the best British album of the decade.

It may be twenty nine years since “The Lexicon Of Love”, but ABC audiences and the press all say that the energy and the vocals of the band today easily match what they  put out back in the 80’s , giving audiences worldwide a great night of music and entertainment. Whether performing as a band, or performing with an Orchestra Martin Fry is the consummate show-man. ABC are a firm favourite with the retrro crowd and are sure to delight once again.

Jimmy Somerville co-founded Bronski Beat in 1983 who went on to have a number of UK hits, their most successful being “Small-town Boy” which reach number 3 in the charts.

Jimmy left Bronski Beat in 1985, and formed The Communards who had a number of hits, including a cover of "Don't Leave Me This Way", which spent four weeks at number 1 in the UK charts, and became the biggest-selling single of 1986 in the UK. He also sang backing vocals on Fine Young Cannibals' version of "Suspicious Minds", which was a UK Top 10 hit. Jimmy is the relative new boy on the retro circuit but has been impressing crowds for the last couple of years and is sure to do so at Flashback

Go Wests debut ‘We Close Our Eyes’ was released in the spring of 1985. It reached number 5 in the UK charts and became a top 10 hit in the USA. This success was followed by three further UK top 10 hits – ‘Call Me’, ‘Goodbye Girl’ and ‘Don’t Look Down’.

The album 'Go West' sold 1.5 million copies worldwide and remained on the UK chart for 83 weeks, establishing them as one of the greatest songwriting duos to emerge in the 80’s. In 1986 they won the BRIT Award for ‘Best British Newcomer’ Go West are another firm favourite on the circuit, see if they do their cover of Kings of Leon...

Midge Ure is an artist who has recieved Ivor Novello, Grammy, BASCAP awards along with a flotilla of gold and platinum records, Midge Ure really needs very little introduction. By April '79, with his name being added to many musicians' contact book, Ure had been asked by Billy Currie, Chris Cross and Warren Cann to become the new frontman in Ultravox.

The band was a major influence on the new romantic and electro-pop movements of the early '80s. Their successful trademark was combining Midge's powerful guitar riffs with sweeping synthesiser motifs, enigmatic imagery and state-of-the-art visuals.

Tracks like Reap the Wild Wind, Dancing With Tears in My Eyes, Love's Great Adventure and 1981's timeless Vienna were all massive hits the world over as they charted with awesome regularity, not only on single, but with seven consecutive top ten albums in just six years.

Katrina is the former lead singer of Katrina & The Waves who had their first break in 1984 when The Bangles covered their song Going Down To Liverpool. This drew attention to the group and lead to an international deal with Capitol Records. Walking on Sunshine was followed by more chart hits - Do You Want Crying and Que Te Quiero in 1985, Sun Street in 1986 and That’s The Way in 1989, with performances at Madison Square Garden, The Mall, Washington DC, The Marquee Club and CBGBs where Katrina sang with Joey Ramone. Lets not forget her 1997 Eurovision win for the UK, Love Shine A Light.

Doctor and the Medics were created 21 years ago by the Doctor, The Reverend Clive Thomas Jackson. During that time they have had a very colourful and successful career as both recording Artists and performers. Undoubtedly the band has been best known for their 2.4 million selling No 1 hit in 18 countries Spirit in the Sky.

However they have always been recognised as a great live act, in 1985 the NME referred to them as "THE live band of the year." in 1999 the Doctor put together the present line and they have developed a great live show that just has to be seen to be believed with a unique and sensationally flamboyant act.
